I Truly Forgive You, Really
Genesis 5:22-7:25; Matthew 18:21-19:12; Psalm 23:1-6; Proverbs 5:22-23
"Then Peter came to Him and said, 'Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?' Jesus said to him, 'I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, 'Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.' Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.'" (Matthew 18:21-27)
Can you identify? I know I can. I probably apologize to the Lord every day for something I just did or for things that I still feel bad about from the past. I'm so grateful that the Lord is so merciful, I know I owe Him more than I could ever repay. His Word says that He is faithful to forgive our sins and to cast them as far as the east is to the west. (Psalm 103:12) Even if our hearts condemns us, God is greater than our hearts. (I John 3:20) If we will just acknowledge our wrong, God promptly forgives and cleanses us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:9) I don't know about you but I am dependent on His Word. I cling to it and put all my faith in it.
In the next few verses, it finishes the story of the man who had been forgiven. It shows him going back and finding a fella that owed him. It was way less than what he had been forgiven, yet he had no compassion on his debtor and had him thrown in jail.
Why is it then, with all of this knowledge, we still struggle with forgiving and letting go of bad feelings brought about by people we believe have hurt or offended us. I mean, let's think about ourselves. How many times have you asked the Lord to forgive you? How many times have you asked to be forgiven for the same thing? Then is it fair to withhold forgiveness from someone else when they ask. Annoying isn't it. Like the character in the story we are far more gracious with ourselves than we are with others. How does God look at this though?
"And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses." (18:34-35)
No one's saying you have to be a doormat, but you must forgive and let go. And I mean really forgive and move on, not just say it and still harbor ill will in your heart. For that I think we need divine grace. Help us Jesus!
PRAYER:
Lord, please give me the revelation concerning forgiveness. I ask You to give me the grace You have so that I can not only forgive but let go of the offense, hurt and anger that I feel. Lord, I want to extend to others what I expect from You for myself. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
